We don't use ours as my partner takes things straight to tip for recycling etc. Have heard during my community activities that some people have problems in leaving it out and the box getting put back in wrong place, or even blown away?
Have you got any feedback about that and any solutions as I would be happy to pass them on? |

Jim, do not hijack another thread please. If you are interested then message me privately. Of course if it is a genuine and concerned question, I am happy to answer on here. As long as it is not for mischief!
I think it is really good that kerbsider has joined and asked for feedback. I would certainly be passing it on to neighbourhood forums and anywhere else where it may be appreciated.
Why are you asking 'in what capacity'? You know I am a Resident Representative? That is how I got feedback about the problems with blue bins so what is the problem with that?
Maybe go to the thread on 'advice and guidance?' and tell the forum readers why you have done nothing about the problem that I have exposed even though you knew about it months ago?
I will not get into negative posts again Jim so if that is all you are asking questions for, please message me privately rather than destroying the positive that HTH is now (without Jimmy).

I will be sharing any feedback with residents who I have contact with should they need info on blue box. Why do you ask Jim?
With regards to posts, if I have anything to add that might be of value, I will post. Is that a problem? |

| I think the collections work reasonably well but I guess there's always room for improvement - just like there's also room for improvement in the belief that recycling is for other people. |

Went to a really good event in South Shields last year. All about recycling and enviro stuff.
Would be great over here. I researched it as part of the PASS Project.
Good point about responsibility, everyone needs to do it. But maybe HBC could give us stats that shows how much money saved, how much landfill decreased.
With the issue at Seaton, would be good to show how good recycling conduct can meet the needs of Seaton residents and across Hartlepool too.
I think a major problem is that people think that any money saved will jsut be paid as a bonus to the Officers involved in promoting it! |

| I think they do publish the figures each year but can't remember what it was last time around - about 35% I think. |

The topic seems to have been hi jacked again ! Get off your soap boxes Christine and Jim. Kerbsider asked quote: Hi I work for the blue box collectors and I just wanted to see if anyone had some feedback about it.
He wasn't aking for a history of recycling or for a lecture. To answer HIM - Personally I find that the blue box collection is pretty good. This is down to those who actually do the work on the ground - and I would make a guess that they do not work directly for Hartlepool Borough Council. If I am wrong - I apologise in advance and will be amazed that anything could be so well organised by anyone inside the Kremlin. I would guess that HBC has awarded a contract to a company to do the collections for them and the management of that company has devised a system which produces a return for their business, suitably rewards their employees and satisfies HBC jobsworthies. They must be paid on results (oh for that approach in the Civic centre)by way of a bonus, considering the fact that not only do they not hang around but they do a good job. They even leave the blue box directly outside our back door and I've seen them running with the boxes ! Keep up the good work Kerbsider and mates and thanks.

Yes agreed, I think the fact that Kerbsider has posted on here shows that he/she wants to ensure a good service.
Hearing from JoJo that the service is good is something to celebrate. Though through my community work, I have been told that some people have complained about the collection services in general whereby their bins, bags or boxes are not put back in the same place etc. This was aired at a neighbourhood Forum meeting whereby Denise Ogden talked about the boxes and the covers that you can by. I went to all three and similar issues were raised.
I will be letting local people know that kerbsider is asking for feedback and sure if things have improved or do improve, they will let kerbsider know. |

| i do find that when the blue bins are emptied there is broken glass left and also cans left in the middle of the road, its even worse when the white bags are emptied paper and cardboard is left flying all over the place which then gets blown into peoples gardens |

That is useful to know brianace, as health and safety issues there. I am sure that there is a time scale for picking up rubbish so they quickly get rubbish in but the boxes blow over as well as the bags!
Sure kerbsider will find that useful. |

Thanks for feedback. We are a private company working on behalf of HBC. we have four crews of 3 lads each and over the working fortnight we service every property (about 42,000)and we try our best to replace boxes where we find them but obviously we cant always manage. We use a slave box system to transfer the stuff from your box and bag to the truck for sorting so in theory your box will never be moved aprt from tipping it. It would help if residents marked their box with a number so we have an idea where it came from. We try to put boxes back securely on windy days but there's no weight in them when they're empty and on Bishop Cuthbert and Clavering lots of properties have no garden walls to stash them behind. A brick in your box will sort it out.
Spillages are a problem and we have tried to minimise them. As I said we tip your box into one of our's (they're exactly the same, they come off the same pallet as the ones you may get delivered) so if your box is piled high with cans and bottles something is likely to fall off as soon as we move it. As we sort all the materials by hand, separating cans from glass and glass into separate green, clear and brown compartments on the wagon. If you've seen our trucks you will notice we have nets across the top of the stillages to prevent material falling over the side. These nets develop holes in them because we have to drive the trucks down narrow tree lined streets with cars parked on them to collect boxes and sometimes material will fal through the holes. We're working to improve the design to stop this happening cos a set of nets lasts about 3 months these days.
I could go on and on about the minutiae of the job but I realise it is totally irrelevant to the People of Hartlepool who just want their box emptied. We do try our best but we are at the bottom of the pecking order and we cant make any real changed which could improve services and improve recycling rates |

If you live within the HBC boundary I can pretty much guarantee we will drive a truck past you house to collect materials. Can I ask why you choose to take it to the tip? I'm not having a go but we're always trying to drum up tonnage |

| hi kerbsider in the past year ive swept up broken glass from the road on at least 2 occasions this has fallen from the lorry to be left in the road by the operatives and whether the blue bin is over flowing or not it is up to the operatives to take care and not spill glass and cans into the road |

| I agree, we should do more about this. I'll try and get some new equipment for cleaning up spillages and I hope you will see an improvement. |

Thank you so much Kerbsider. I would love people to follow your example and give such feedback.
Your explanation is really appreciated and I think it would be great if your company could go to neighbourhood forums to give feedback and recieve comments.
In relation to my box, I am always keen to get an excuse to use the recycling facility! My partner is absolutely obsessed with keeping the boxes and bins clean to the point that he takes everything to the tip himself! It drives me mad!
Please feel free to give me as many reasons as you can to get him to leave it to your company! He just might take notice of you if it means saving jobs, getting credit for recycling etc!
I dont mind him doing it on the odd occasion if we had much more waste than normal, but doing it religiously is a real bug bare for me! |
