a few facts to consider on this point is,
1. Stockton is complaining that they can not cope with the extra work load now.
2. Hartlepool hospital was saving money, where as Stockton was in the red by a few million, when the powers that be merged the two our savings went to wipe out there debt and they are still in the red
3. how many prem babies have lost there fight for life because they had to be transferred to Stockton ( 3).
4. Hartlepool hospital managed to open a theatre and assemble a team in time to save a mans life that would have died if he had to be transferred to Stockton.

Welcome Chaufer!

I think your post speaks volumes! This is the type of thing that needs to come out in meetings. It also shows supports my insistence on asking why a new hospital is being chased when a current hospital is being closed?

Why aren't EVERY sitting councillor asking these questions?

People like Wright and the Hospital Trust like to control the flow of information which is why they hate HTH so much.

I feel so frustrated that an impartial and informed debate is yet to be considered at the expense of us in Hartlepool. I have no problem with politics as long as it is keeping people as a priority but in this case, it is quite obvious that we are being ignored.

When you quote statistics which show that there have been deaths which could be avoided, this nonsense becomes a serious problem and people with power should be listening and responding.

Thank you for your contributions Chaufer as it is information like this which helps us to know what is happening as this would not be shared otherwise from my experience.

Iain Wright secured a 90 minute debate yesterday in Parliament (Westminster Hall) on the future of hospital provision. This was a follow up on the early July debate by the Stockton MP.

There is much to read here. I don`t think I should copy and paste all the debate here apart from two extracts.

"That is an understandable stance, based on affection for the great service that Hartlepool hospital has provided down the years. The big events of life have occurred in the hospital for many thousands of Hartlepudlians, including me. I am thinking of the births of my four children, the death of my nana and the saving of my son Benjamin's life twice-first when he contracted meningitis at the age of eight, and then at the age of 12, when he suffered a stroke. The dedication of people working in that hospital is second to none, and my family are very much testimony to that.

However, I fear that we will not see the return of hospital services to Hartlepool, and that we will have the worst of all possible worlds-hospital services will move away from Hartlepool and become more inaccessible to the people whom I serve, and we will not have a world-class facility in the borough of Hartlepool to replace them."

and

"Mr Wright: I thank the Minister for that clarification. Some of my hon. Friends might probe him a bit further on that point, because we are unclear about a number of aspects. Let me return to the point about the appropriate and rigorous procedure that took place in Whitehall.

My recollection might be incorrect, so the Minister may have to provide further clarification. Will he confirm whether a letter of direction, which would be needed if the permanent secretary was unhappy with the decision taken by the Secretary of State, was needed for the proposed new hospital? The decision has left Hartlepool and the surrounding communities high and dry. There will be no new world-class hospital, the plans for which were based on clinical decisions, and no money to upgrade existing facilities. I fear that we will soon have one hospital serving the people of my constituency, and that hospital will be in North Tees. That is completely unsuitable for the task, and for the people of Hartlepool, who will find it appallingly hard to travel to."

I haven`t read it all, but I reckon he gave it a fair crack of the whip!

Excellent. This site knows more about promoting public involvement than Hartlepool Council or The Mail will ever do. I've read about Wright's Hospital debate in The Mail and now there it is on the main page of this site for me to watch in its entirety so I don't have to rely on a brief sound bite of a write up in the paper. Now why couldn't The Mail have done that on its web site?

Silent majority I hear you loud and clear and welcome to HTH! I totally agree and think HTH should be promoted as widely as possible as it is the only way that residents will be able to make an informed choice especially in voting for things in this town.

Death by a Thousands Cuts

I just wanted to mention the stories below taken from HTH. It's stomach churning when the cynicsm of peole we are ultimately paying for is aimed directly at the public. Who Speaks for Us? No One.

Taken from the Black Cat page:

A Good Time To Bury Bad News?
Someone on the HTH Forum rather astutely pointed out that the oncoming Tall Ships Event coincides with the end of the self-imposed, six week period the North Tees and Hartlepool Hospital Trust has given itself to find funding for the ill-fated new hospital at Wynyard. The suggestion that ‘this maybe a good time to bury bad news’ no doubt had its roots in the e-mailings of a former political researcher for the Labour Party but I would be wary of dismissing the possibility out-of-hand. The Hospital Trust, like many public bodies these days, puts much weight on Public Relations. I remember well the internal e-mail sent to all staff warning of any future contact with the media. Public Relations is all about controlling not only what information is released but when it is released and there is no doubt that a town distracted by its biggest event for years may indeed find itself looking through the wrong side of a a useful window of opportunity ‘to bury bad news.

. . . and the story on the front page from yesterday

Staff at the University Hospital of Hartlepool have been told that the accident and emergency department will be closed in the October, 2010.

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust said much of the work will move to the new £20m One Life centre on Park Road.

The closure was the subject of a leak to the press earlier in the year leading to the Hospital Trust claiming that no decisions had yet been made. The Trust then went on to e-mail all of its staff threatening them with disciplinary action if any of them talked to the press in future.

We now know that the leak was based on firm information and that the real issue for the Trust at the time was its loss of control over the flow of information to the public.

Alan Foster, chief executive of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust, said: "What we have done today is have meetings with our staff about the changes that are proposed so we can work through and plan those changes properly. We will be giving clear advice to patients and GPs as to how the services will operate. That information is starting now and will carry on right through the summer.

It is believed that the closure announcement was meant to take place during the Tall Ships Event but the possibility of further leaks forced the Trust to bring the announcement forward.

I can see what has happened here, I think. The plan was to release the news during the Tall Ships but then some HR wag cocked it up by pointing up that the 90 day consultation rule to staff meant that employees would have to be told this week - frustratingly days before the Tall Ships.

I reckon the possibility of some member of staff leaking the news was just too great given that it was a member of staff who broke the news earlier in the year through the first leak.

I'm quite sure that the final announcement to close the hospital is part of an already prepared plan and the date for that announcement has already been pencilled in.

I got told recently that the land for Hartlepool Hospital had already been sold and that is why they wanted to go to Wynyard and fight for Wynyard for the hospital.

Anyone know if this is true as it is looking that way with this latest information?

The Trust applied for planning permission for 100 dwellings on part of its land which HBC granted. The land had previously been occupied by buildings that were part of the old General Hospital.

You can see where we are heading with this though - money gained from the sale of hospital land will come in very handy; now most probabaly to expand North Tees.

To me The Trust has a serious Stockton bias and it's not just the patients that will pay and do already pay a heavy cost - you have to remember the costs incurred by those visiting relatives.

Free at the point of need? Yea right.

I want to know why Wrighty is willing to play poodle to Stockton. During the recent debate, he referred to the Darzi report which wanted to bring specialised maternity services to Hartlepool. Wright described this as 'something the people of Stockton 'could not live with''. The people of Stockton objected to having their babies born in Hartlepool yet apparently there's no problem with Hartlepool people having their babies born in Stockton.

He also makes reference to Hartlepool having a population of 90,000 compared to Stockton's 140,000 - helping to encourage the notion that Hartlepool is some sort of 'junior partner' within the Hospital Trust. The catchment area population of the present Hartlepool Hospital is around 200,000 people.

Seems to me that we've lumbered ourselves with an MP far too quick and ready to play second fiddle to his neighbours. Who speaks for us? - well not Wrighty, for sure.
