Signs at both ends of Marina Way say the road will be closed from 1pm till late during the Tall Ships, how are people supposed to do their shopping and will the stores be given compensation for loss of trade. Asda, Currys, Comet etc on the North side and Staples etc on the South side.

Yes, just like the emergency services have informed people they should stock up on plasters and paracetamol and not even bother trying to get any urgent medical treatment for the 4 days. |

LOL
Actually, it's a very good point. How do you get to ASDA, Currys etc? Or are the stores hoping the 1m visitors will compensate for any loss.
mmm...come to the Tall Ships and buy a 42" Plasma TV....hope they haven't stocked up

so coming from the Headland I do what exactly? Drive up Powlett Road, along Milbank (mind the kids), down Brougham Terrace along Clarence Road (mind the speed bumps) left over the Gateway Bridge into ASDA. Oh Joy - still it will be worth it for my share of the £16m - works out at £177 each - enough to get me 4 new tyres.

I have been speaking to business owners and staff in relation to operation during Tall Ships when they may not be a tourist type business, so shops fit in there.
The managers and staff who drew short straws were not allowed the time off. A number of staff has to be in as if the shop is busy they have to be able to deal with added security as more opportunities to take things may occur in the hustle bustle!
There is going to be logistical nightmares for the four days and quite frankly, I can see a number of the smaller business ending up closing as getting staff there will be a nightmare!
And just think, this will be even worse if it dares to rain! |

Stop being so negative, surely a little inconvenience is worth it to be part of the biggest party Hartlepool has ever seen. There will be dancing in the streets, tears of joy and laughter, you will tell your grandchildren "I was at Tall Ships 2010 in Hartlepool!"
I actually won't be able to say that. I'm going as far away from Hartlepool as I can get for the 4 days of the Tall ****sShips Visit |

I actually think you need to plan your exit MoW as form what I have heard, there is gonna be grid-lock possibilities going out of the town before the event!
Loads of local people have not believed the hype thrown at us and they are doing exactly what you are doing and getting out to avoid it like the plague!
I actually feel very annoyed about the false information that it is the biggest free event of the year. It is in no way free with the costs that people will pay from stalls and stands given that they will need to make lots of money to pay the ground rent for a start!
As much as I am trying to be confident about the event, I just think it is unfair to market it as free when it will exclude a number of deprived or disadvantaged families who will not be able to afford the park and ride, refreshments and other goodies on offer.
Surely with three years planning, they could have looked at some funding bid that would allow support for those families who cannot afford to come to this free event!
One thing I am very happy to credit Dock Fest with was the sheer number of people from Hartlepool that came along. It far outweighed tourists coming to the town and that is good for local people.
I really hope that when it comes down to it, local people can get to attend and enjoy the event without being prevented because of charges. Maybe this is where our local businesses could benefit as they could keep their prices the same and it will be so much cheaper than the beer tents and stalls that are being drafted in from other areas of the country.
In this case, I have my fingers crossed that businesses around Hartlepool such as bars, restaurants, shops and market traders will get a much needed boost. |

I've been told many times that I don't appreciate the finer points of finance but surely a bank would tell me to get lost if I went to them with a business plan that identified as a key part of my sales or marketing strategy a one off event like the Tall Ships? How can you build a viable business on the back of 4 good days? Wouldn't 10 events each attracting 100,000 people be better than 1 event attracting 1,000,000 or 50 event's each attracting 20,000 even better? Why didn't the Council put the £3,000,000 into something sustainable on a smaller scale? I was at Hartlepool train station yesterday and the big hoardings welcoming travellers to Hartlepool Tall Ships 2010 look very nice but in just over 2 weeks they will be out of date and will need to come down. Nothing will look more pathetic than these hoardings still being there after the event. Surely more generic "welcome to Hartlepool" signs would have brightened up the place and have had a longer life than a couple of weeks? Forward planning? What's that? |

Well.....from visiting Sunderland International Airshow at the weekend - to be honest it was total mayhem!! Stuck in traffic for 1hour 45mins to get to a Park n Ride, then waiting in queues for the bus ride in to teh event. Circa - 2hours 15mins!! After 20 odd years of carrying this event, THEY still haven't managed the coordination of the 'event' - roll on Tall Ships!!!
Talking about being negative - but its god damn obvious. |

the question asked was how do you get to asda currys etc hence my reply. the south side will be out of bounds. the south side comprises of mainly pubs restaurants so you dont need to go in the car problem solved |
