Bank Invests in Tall Ships

It is sponsoring cycle route signage and a secure cycle park that will provide free storage for up to 500 bikes a day in Greenland Road, close to the event site.

Now people are being urged to consider travelling to The Tall Ships Races by bike - in line with Hartlepool Borough Council’s desire to make the event as environmentally-friendly as possible.

Tall Ships Project Manager Michelle Daurat said: “We have an on-going commitment to plan and deliver the event according to the British Standard(BS) 8901 framework for Sustainable Event Management and the cycling initiative fits perfectly with that.

“We have been working closely with Sustrans, the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity, to develop cycle routes to the event site and we would actively encourage people to use them.”

Phil Roxburgh, HSBC branch manager in Hartlepool, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring The Tall Ships Races cycle initiative, which reflects our corporate commitment to sustainable business initiatives that safeguard the environment.

Transport hub opens in time for Hartlepool Tall Ships

Thousands of visitors to the Tall Ships Races in Hartlepool will be among the first to use a £4m transport interchange.

It is hoped the facility will make public transport more attractive to travellers by bringing together rail, coach, bus and taxi services.

The interchange is next to the railway station and is being opened in time for the Tall Ships event.

Up to one million visitors are expected to visit between 7 and 10 August.

Transport bosses said the interchange will improve travel for people in the town and it is hoped it will improve economic development and regeneration.

Network Rail route director Richard Lungmuss said: "The development of this transport interchange and the improvement works to the town's railway station are great news for Hartlepool.

"We now have facilities that we can be proud of and we will be able to showcase these to the hundreds-of-thousands of visitors who will visit the Tall Ships event."

So I wonder who went on the BSI training Course, which Sustainability Consultant was selected to "assist" and if the event will be audited and certified as complying with the standard. It would be another "badge" for HBC to put on its letterhead and no doubt will make Ms.Daurant even more employable when she moves on to her next post (unless of course she has become so valuable to HBC that she is taken onto permanent staff, which is the usual thing after a contract job is completed!)

good spin enviromentally friendly. Full town in grid lock while cyclists are dodging through traffic, broken glass and dog terds.
Pity the budget has been cut to improve our cycle paths and routes. This would have added to enviroment for years to come and not a four day whim.
Come on HBC open your eyes and take off them yellow tinted glasses (pun at the yellow lines). Look to the future and not your next pay check and ego boost.

When the Tall Ships was first announced I genuinely thought that it might be the catalyst that would spur HBC on to finally sort out the marina and especially the lousy maintenance but I can tell you that NOTHING and I really do mean NOTHING has changed. It's still a 20 year old, half-finished building site ran by a couple of greedy, cowboy developers.

Be honest. Didn't we all assume that in the three and and a half years since the event was first announced, didn't we all assume that something would have been done about Jackson's Landing?

We've always said on HTH that success at the Tall Ships was inevitable because people's expectations are low - as long as they can see the ships, buy a beefburger and an ice scream and see some fireworks most people will be content. The failure will be in what the event is compared to what it might have been.

The crazy thing is there are voices within the Council calling for HBC to bid for another tall ships race.

If only we had a proper captain for the Hartlepool ship.

We were told that due to high winds, local advertising of the Tall Ships would only happen two weeks before the event.

Is the Tall Ships Parking book now, really big billboard highlighting the Carnival, red and white signs for the carnival and also the yellow signs(to match the yellow lines, maybe that is our new corporate image?)the only local signposting that is going to be done?

No signs to encourage people to realise Navigation Point is worth seeing before and after the Tall Ships. People just have to look at that to realise that there is a lack of drive for 24/7 businesses in Hartlepool.

I did think that a large sign advertising the event should have been placed on the north wall of the railway station months ago for passing passengers to see but what the hell. A council that can stare at 60 odd baron flag poles and not think that maybe it would be a good idea to put some colourful flags on them is beyond help.

I was told that the flag poles were not used (but they were going to be about two weeks before the event) as the wind would blow away whatever was put up.

However with a history of metal work, I would have thought metal ship looking flags could be created all year around but attaching them to lamp posts.

I have seen similar types of things elsewhere but why could Hartlepool not do something like that. At least throwing money at that would have had long lasting benefits?

I would have been delighted to see the council putting up metal work that would last all year round and been a spectacle to see. No irony there?
